Valley Sends 34 Teams to World Robotics Finals

This April, 34 teams representing 29 schools from across the Tennessee Valley will compete at world robotics finals!

TVA congratulates all the elementary, middle and high school students who competed in the 2017-18 robotics season. This April, 34 teams representing 29 schools from across TVA’s service territory will compete at their respective world robotics finals held in Detroit, Michigan; Louisville, Kentucky; or Houston, Texas. (See below for a complete list of competitors.)

“I’m excited to see this many teams represent our area at the world championships,” says Rachel Crickmar, program manager, TVA Community Relations. “The Valley is known for transportation, manufacturing and space exploration and I hope we can add robotics world champions to that list.”

For over 15 years, TVA has partnered with student robotics programs as a hands-on way to help get children excited about science, technology, engineering and math and develop their leadership skills. “There is nothing more important than investing in our students’ future,” says Crickmar. “Inspiring students to choose STEM-related subjects is critical in developing tomorrow’s workforce and giving our children an advantage in today’s job market.”

To help students compete, TVA sponsored approximately 80 competitions during the 2017-18 robotics season and partnered with over 500 elementary, middle and high schools—reaching over 10,000 students.

Robotics teams design their own robots to compete head to head in a series of missions. Each age group has design criteria that get more complex as students’ progress into the high school league. Local winners move on to regionals and then on to state competitions. The ultimate prize is to represent their school and age group at the world competition.

Crickmar says, “Just watching the excitement in these students is inspiring. They are the future engineers and technicians who will shape the world we live in and I’m proud to help.”

TVA Community Relations

We contribute to our local youth through educational programs and competitions focused on energy-related subjects (STEM) in both primary and secondary schools. By narrowing our scope to STEM for school-related assistance, we are helping educate the future workforce and building a pipeline of future employees for TVA and other businesses in the Valley. In essence, we are helping ensure that today’s students are ready for tomorrow’s jobs. Read more about TVA Community Relations.
