TVA to Close Wilbur Dam Road May 11 and May 16 to Move 240 Ton Crane

May 04, 2016

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - The Tennessee Valley Authority will temporarily close Wilbur Dam Road, in Carter County, Tenn., on Wednesday, May 11 and again on Monday, May 16. The road will be closed both days between the fisherman’s parking lot and the Watauga Hydro powerhouse from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT in order to assemble, load and move a 240-ton crane. Residents, school transit and Carter County Emergency Management crews, firefighters and law enforcement have been notified. Emergency crews will be on standby as a precautionary measure.

The crane will be used in a hydro-modernization project at Watauga Dam that will replace original 1942 equipment. The 240-ton crane will remove the trolley from the plant powerhouse crane through the Watauga Hydro powerhouse roof. It is part of a multi-step engineering process that involves the disassembly and modernization of the Unit 1 generator.

For media viewing and photo opportunities of the crane move, please go to the fisherman’s parking lot on Wilbur Dam Road between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. The crane will make its return trip on Monday, May 16.
