TVA Extends First Public Comment Period on Ash Storage at Allen Fossil Plant

January 07, 2019

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tennessee Valley Authority is extending the timeframe for the public to comment on the scope of a planned environmental study of coal ash storage at its Allen Fossil Plant near Memphis, Tennessee.

TVA is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement to consider potential environmental impacts of various options for future management of coal ash and other coal combustion residuals at Allen. The first step of that process is to consider the scope of the study. TVA invites the public to provide input on what should be included in the EIS. The public comment period was to end on Jan. 4. However, TVA is extending the period for public input by 27 days, and will now consider comments through Jan. 31, 2019.

In addition, TVA will host a public information session in Memphis on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 5-8 p.m. CST at the Mitchell Community Center, 602 W. Mitchell Road. Written comments will be accepted at this event. TVA representatives will be available to discuss the EIS, as well as an upcoming Environmental Investigation Plan at Allen, and actions TVA is taking to address arsenic found in shallow monitoring wells at the fossil plant site.

More information on what’s happening at Allen can be found at https://www.tva.gov/Newsroom/Whats-Going-on-at-Allen-Fossil-Plant.

The public can submit comments on the scope of the EIS through Jan. 31, 2019 online at www.tva.com/nepa, by email to arfarless@tva.gov, and in writing to Ashley Farless, NEPA Compliance Specialist, 1101 Market Street, BR4A-C, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
