Dam Safety: Our Top Priority, Every Day—Including Holidays

While Tri-Cities residents were reaching for seconds on turkey and trimmings, Boone Dam Safety Inspector Chester Nelson was ensuring all of us stayed safe during the holiday. Nelson worked Thanksgiving Day as part of TVA’s extensive dam safety program. In the below Nelson installs a probe that takes readings some 138 feet below Boone Dam.

Every day, dam safety workers spend about 30 minutes to take measurements and collect and read data at each of 14 inclinometers. These instruments measure movement in the dam. Boone Dam also has over 200 automated instruments that provide automatic feedback about the dam. Keeping the residents of the Tennessee Valley safe 365 days per year—even on Thanksgiving and Christmas—is imperative to TVA’s mission of service.
