Naval Air Station Meridian Solar Farm

Lauderdale County, Mississippi

On May 18, 2017, the Navy issued a final environmental assessment (EA) and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for its proposed lease of 40 acres to Silicon Ranch Meridian for the construction and operation of a 6-megawatt (direct current) solar photovoltaic (PV) system. TVA is proposing to purchase power from the solar generating facility located on the Naval Air Station (NAS) Meridian in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The Navy’s EA describes the anticipated environmental impacts of the construction and operation of the solar generating facility and associated electrical connection. The environmental effects of decisions made by the Navy and TVA are the same; therefore TVA has carefully reviewed the Navy’s EA and determined that the document adequately bounds the impacts of TVA’s proposed action. TVA is therefore adopting the Navy’s EA and issuing a FONSI.

The Meridian Solar facility, scheduled for completion in 2018, would occupy about 45 acres on the main base of NAS Meridian in Lauderdale County, Mississippi and use photovoltaic panels mounted on multiple rows of fixed- tilt ground-mounted racks to generate electricity. The facility would connect to the existing substation located on NAS Meridian approximately one mile away, which would transmit the power to the TVA network.
