Lighting

Improving lighting systems can result in reduced demand on HVAC systems by cutting down on waste heat produced by inefficient lighting fixtures. Productivity can also be improved by adjusting light to optimal levels in different workspaces.

TVA experts can provide recommendations on optimizing your lighting. We also offer incentives to help cover the cost. Meanwhile, explore our tips on steps you can take today as well as lighting technologies to consider for improving your energy choices for years to come.

First Steps For Improving Lighting

  • Turn off lights:
    • When space is not occupied
    • When you are away from your space
    • When daylight is sufficient
    • In off-hours such as nights and weekends
    • On the exterior during the day
  • Use automatic controls to turn off lights when a space is not occupied. Savings can cover the system cost in as little as a year.
  • Establish lighting level standards, including reducing levels where appropriate. Different work areas have different lighting needs. You can save energy by matching lighting to those needs.
  • Use energy-smart exit signs. Switching from incandescent lights to LEDs or radium strips can reduce electricity use by up to 90 percent.

Lighting Technologies

Turning off lights and other energy-saving tips will promote smart energy usage, but older, outdated lighting simply uses more power than newer, more efficient technologies. Here are some options to consider:

Compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs: CFLs use about 75 percent less energy and last 10 times as long as incandescent bulbs, meaning your payback can come as soon as a few months.

LED lighting: Highly efficient and long-lasting light-emitting diodes (LEDs)have illuminated buttons on stereos and computers for years. New, higher-powered LEDs can replace a broad range of standard lighting fixtures, while reducing energy consumption by up to 90 percent and lasting 10 times longer.

Fluorescent tubes: Replace older T-12 tubes with T-8 tubes, which offer twice the effectiveness and last 60 percent longer, for energy savings of about 30 percent.

Electronic ballasts: Ballasts powered by electronic components produce 10 percent more light from standard fluorescent lamps than traditional electromagnetic ballasts by converting power to light more efficiently. They produce more light for each watt, run cooler and last longer.

High-intensity fluorescent lights: Consider replacing traditional high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting with a T-5 high-intensity fluorescent lighting system, incorporating high-efficiency fluorescent lamps, electronic ballasts and high-efficacy fixtures that maximize output. Your savings will equate to payback in less than three years.

Mercury lamp replacements: Consider replacing mercury lamps with options that are 50 to 60 percent more efficient. Where color rendition is critical, use metal halide lamps; where it’s not, use high-pressure sodium lamps.

Other Benefits of Improving Lighting

  • Reduced demand on HVAC systems by cutting down on waste heat produced by ineffective lighting fixtures
  • Improved productivity as a result of adjusting lighting to optimal levels for different workspaces
