TVA Archaeological Site Stewardship Volunteer: Northwest Alabama

TVA is looking for volunteers with a sincere interest in the protection and preservation of archaeological sites on Pickwick Reservoir in northwest Alabama for TVA’s pilot Thousand Eyes Archaeological Site Stewardship Program.

Volunteers will work with TVA archaeologists to monitor archaeological sites for vandalism and environmental damage.

In order to become a TVA archaeological site stewardship volunteer, all applicants must:

  • Fill out an volunteer form
  • Submit to a background check (applicant must be willing to drive to TVA Muscle Shoals facility—open M-F 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—for fingerprinting in order to complete this background check)
  • Attend a two day training workshop held May 14-15, 2016, in Muscle Shoals/Florence, Alabama (location information will be provided upon selection)
  • Pay a $25 workshop fee, which will be donated to the Alabama Archaeological Society
  • Sign a confidentially agreement confirming your commitment to protect archaeological sites and information related to sensitive resources on TVA land
  • Be over the age of 18 (children between the ages of 14-18 can participate if accompanied by an adult also attending the workshop)
  • Be able to walk long distances to access sites

Following completion of training, participants responsibilities and duties include:

  • Monitoring the site according to the agreed upon schedule
  • Coordinating activities with other site stewards sharing responsibilities for assigned site
  • Collecting data and information on site conditions including photographs and filling out monitoring forms after each visit

Volunteers will receive:

  • Special training by subject-matter experts in archaeology, preservation and other related topics
  • Lunch at the training workshop on Saturday, May 14th
  • Volunteer vest and patch
