Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Communications
Kathy Black is TVA's Senior Vice President of Human Resources & Communications.
Black is a principal adviser to the chief executive officer and board of directors, bringing to her position three decades of broad knowledge and experience across the human resources field. She and her team have responsibility for ensuring TVA has a well-qualified, skilled and diverse workforce able to meet the needs of the nation’s largest public power provider in serving the Tennessee Valley through its mission of energy, environment and economic development.
Black’s areas of responsibility include talent acquisition; diversity and inclusion; human resources business partnerships; leadership and employee development; employee health; labor relations; compensation and benefits; employee concerns; and overseeing the TVA ombudsman. Additionally, Black oversees TVA’s communications group, including internal communications, public relations and brand management.
Before her current appointment, Black served as TVA’s vice president for human resources, and prior to that as director of employee relations. Earlier in her TVA career, she served in general human resources, labor relations and records management roles at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant and in Chattanooga.
Black is a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the military police before joining TVA in 1986. Today, she’s active in several professional and civic organizations. She currently serves on the Tennessee Department of Education’s STEM Leadership Council and Helmets to Hardhats Board of Trustees. She is also a member of the Advisory Council for the Human Resources Department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Black graduated from UT-C with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
