School on Saturday? Most kids would say, “No way!” But for students in Weekend Academy Inc., Saturday is a time for fun-filled activities that also promote learning.

Designed to help young people retain their love of learning at a time when they might be losing interest in school, Weekend Academy Inc. brings inner-city children to TVA and other academic or corporate settings in Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, Tennessee, every other Saturday. Highly interactive learning sessions led by business and community volunteers are followed by field trips designed to enhance the lessons learned.

The students, who are in the third, fourth, and fifth grades, have taken part in activities that include geometry, fly-fishing, ecosystem studies of the Little River near the Great Smoky Mountains, computer lessons, and even a simulated space flight.

They benefit tremendously from the program, and TVA, its customers, and other employers in the area get the promise of reliable, highly qualified candidates for their future workforce.
