Russell Townsend

Russ Townsend is the tribal historic preservation officer for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He was previously employed as director of the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, Tennessee. He has also worked as a professional archaeologist.

Townsend is a member of the Cultural and Heritage Committee for the United Southern and Eastern Tribes. He is also a member of the Society of American Archaeologists and the Southeastern Archaeological Conference. He hold several degrees in anthropology: a bachelor’s from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s from the University of Tulsa. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in his field from the University of Tennessee.
