Public Lands Day is September 29

On Saturday, September 29, about 100,000 volunteers will participate in the 14th annual National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

From picking up trash to planting trees and removing invasive plants, there’s a project for you if you’re willing to help out.

If you live in the Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City, Tenn., area, for example, you may want to call TVA’s Holston-Cherokee-Douglas Watershed Team at 423-585-2136. The team is looking for volunteers to help with a National Public Lands Day trail-building event. The trail site, located off Minga Road near the Boone Dam public boat launch, features excellent bird and wildlife viewing opportunities.

In the Muscle Shoals, Ala., area, volunteers are needed to help remove exotic species at the Old First Quarters Small Wild Area on TVA’s Muscle Shoals Reservation. The event begins at 8 a.m. CDT on Sept. 29 and is sponsored by TVA’s Pickwick-Wheeler Watershed Team, the Shoals Environmental Alliance, the Shoals Audubon Society, the Shoals Wildflower Society, and Alabama Outdoors.
