TVA to develop land management plan for mountain reservoirs
TVA is beginning work on a plan to guide land-use decisions on about 6,200 acres of TVA-managed public lands located along nine mountain reservoirs: Ocoee No. 1, Ocoee No. 2, Ocoee No. 3, Apalachia, Blue Ridge, Hiwassee, Nottely, Chatuge, and Fontana.
The development of this Mountain Reservoirs Land Management Plan is the latest in a series of planning efforts undertaken by TVA to identify the most suitable uses of the public land in its care, says Angela Sims, Manager of TVA’s Chickamauga/Hiwassee Watershed Team.
“TVA’s land policy is currently undergoing review. The new policy will determine the framework for the development of the Mountain Reservoirs Plan and future land-management plans. But the objective will remain the same: to establish a long-term management strategy for future uses of public lands.” (Note: See related story, Under review: TVA land policy.)
Public involvement is critical to the process, says Sims. “Before any decisions are made, TVA seeks input from a wide range of individuals, organizations, and agencies who are users of TVA-managed reservoir lands. We want to know which land uses are important to users and how they think we should manage the land to ensure that it can support these uses in the future. This input, along with resource data and analysis, is used in allocating parcels of land for specific uses.”
TVA’s land management process provides several opportunities for public review and comment, beginning with a step called scoping.
“At the start of the process, we ask the public to help us identify all the issues pertaining to future public needs concerning the reservoir lands covered by the plan,” says Sims. “That input provides the basis for the development of the plan.”
Opportunities for public input, to be announced later, will include submitting comments through TVA’s web site and at public meetings.
Updates on the Mountain Reservoirs Land Management Plan will be included in future issues of River Neighbors and posted on TVA’s web site.
