Certified Clean Marinas
A few ounces of gas spilled when topping off a boat, a handful of paint chips or sawdust created during a maintenance project, or a cupful of heavy-duty cleanser used to clean a boat deck might not seem like substantial environmental hazards. But added together and multiplied by thousands of vessels at marinas across the Valley, such actions can have a disastrous impact on the Tennessee River system.
Mountain View Marina at Bear Paw, located on Hiwassee Reservoir, is the latest marina to earn Clean Marina certification.
By the same token, when 72 marinas make a commitment to reducing boating-related pollution, it’s possible to make a real difference in the river’s health.
As the Memorial Day holiday approaches and the boating season begins in earnest, TVA would like to recognize Valley marinas that have met the rigorous standards required by TVA for Clean Marina certification.
“Certified marinas have gone beyond what is required by law,” says TVA Clean Marina Coordinator Melinda Watson. “Not only do they meet all federal, state, and local regulations related to marina management, they’ve voluntarily adopted a variety of other practices to minimize the effects of boating on water quality, such as better fuel handling, disposal of boat sewage, and public education and outreach.”
Customer response can sometimes make a real difference in a marina’s commitment to good stewardship, says Watson. “If your marina is already certified as a Clean Marina, take the time to tell the owner or operator that you appreciate the effort they’re making to protect the water quality that’s so important to those who enjoy boating. If they’re not participating, speak up and let them know such things matter to you. Add your voice to the growing number of people who think it’s important to keep Valley waterways protected for the next generation of boaters.”
