Recreation facility improvements

This summer, reservoir users will notice improvements at several TVA public recreation areas. Here’s some of the work that has been done since the last recreation season:

Long-distance hikers on the Appalachian Trail can now look forward to a
hot shower at the TVA-maintained shelter near Fontana Dam.

Fontana

Added hot-and-cold showers and made other improvements to the bathhouse facilities at the Appalachian Trail shelter near the dam. The shelter, which is maintained by TVA, has been dubbed the “Fontana Hilton” by hikers due to its restrooms, view, spaciousness, and cleanliness. Additional showers are still available at the Fontana Dam Visitor Center.

Tellico

Constructed an access road, parking lot, and concrete boat ramps. A boarding pier is planned for completion in 2009.

Guntersville

Upgraded the electrical and water systems, bathhouses, and day-use area at Honeycomb Campground and removed old decking, firewood, and dead trees.

Wilson

Constructed a new boarding pier at Lock Six Boat Ramp. The new pier is designed as a breakwater, which will reduce shoreline erosion and make it easier for boaters to launch, board, dock, and trailer their boats in windy conditions.

Norris

Installed eight new benches along Song Bird Trail.

Wheeler

Replaced the courtesy pier at Mallard Creek Boat Ramp.
