Underwater Contour Maps

In response to numerous requests from fishermen, we now offer prints of underwater contour maps of TVA reservoirs.

These maps fall into five general categories:

1. Old editions of the 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps made prior to impoundment, most of which show the pool outline.
Scale 1" = 2000', with 20- and 40-foot contour intervals, depending on reservoir. Blueline prints are available.

List of reservoirs, and quadrangles required to cover each:

  • Fort Loudoun: 138-SW, SE
  • Melton Hill: 130-NE; 137-SW; 138-NW
  • Norris: 136-SW, SE; 137-NE; 145-NE, NW, SW, SE; 154-SW, SE; 146-NW
  • Chatuge: 150-SE; 151-NE
  • Nottely: 142-NE
  • Boone: 198-NE, NW
  • Fort Patrick Henry: 198-NW
  • South Holston: 206-SE; 213-NW, SW
  • Watauga: 207-SE; 214-SW
  • Watts Bar: 118-NE; 123-SW, SE; 124-NW; 130-SW
(See item (c) below for additional coverage of Watts Bar Reservoir.)
  • Tims Ford: 80-NE; 86-SW, SE; 87-NE, NW
(See item (d) below for additional coverage of Tims Ford Reservoir.)

2. Old editions of the 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps that have been photo-revised to show the pool outline superimposed over existing features.
Scale 1" = 2000', with 20-foot contours. Lithoprinted in color.

List of projects, and quadrangles required to cover each:

  • Beech River: 11-NE, SW, SE; 22-NW
  • Fontana: 149-NE; 158-NE; 158-NW
  • Normandy: 86-NW

3. Detail topographic maps. These flowage topography maps were prepared during TVA’s investigations of the projects prior to impoundment.

  • Guntersville
    Size: 16" by 20"
    Scale: 1" = 1/2 mile.
Maps have a 5-foot contour interval ranging generally from elevation 565 to 605 in the lower end of the reservoir to 3 or 4 rim contours in the upper reaches. The pool outline can be established by shading the normal pool elevation of 595 on the maps. Blueline print reproductions of these 19 sheets are available. Index is available on request.

  • Kentucky
    Scale: 1" = 2000'
Maps show underwater features on a standard 7.5-minute base with a 5-foot contour interval. The contours generally range from elevation 330 to 370. The outline of the reservoir can be established by shading the normal pool elevation of 359 on the maps. Blueline print reproductions of this series of 33 sheets are available. Index is available on request.

  • Watts Bar
    Scale: 1" = 1250'
This series of five maps covers only the area of the reservoir between river miles 530 and 557. Maps have a 5-foot contour interval. The reservoir limits are not shown but can be established by shading the normal pool contour at elevation 741 on the maps. Blueline print reproductions are available. Index is available on request.

  • Chickamauga
    Size: 22" by 34"
    Scale: 1" = 1000'
A series of seven maps covering the reservoir between river miles 471 and 508, and an eighth sheet consisting of maps covering the upper reaches of Wolftever and Soddy Creeks. These maps were prepared from original land acquisition maps and show the pool outline with contours at alternating 6- and 7-foot intervals, ranging generally from the original river bank to the normal pool elevation of 683. Also shown are roads, houses, streams, woods, and other features that existed prior to inundation. Lithoprint reproductions of these maps are available. An index is available free on request.

  • Bear Creek Watershed
A series of large-scale topographic maps that cover the four Bear Creek Watershed reservoirs and were prepared prior to impoundment. The maps show topographic detail and planimetric features such as houses, roads and buildings as they existed at the time of survey. The map for Cedar Creek Reservoir is the only one in the series that shows the normal pool outline. You will have to shade the normal pool contour on the other maps to show the extent of the reservoir. Listed below are the reservoir names, number of maps required, normal pool elevations, scales, and contour intervals:
    • Little Bear Creek: 2 maps, elevation 620 feet, scale 1" = 400', interval 10 feet
    • Cedar Creek: 1 map, elevation 580 feet, scale 1" = 800', interval 10 feet
    • Bear Creek: 4 maps, elevation 576 feet, scale 1" = 400', interval 20 feet
    • Upper Bear Creek: 4 maps, elevation 797 feet, scale 1" = 1000', interval 10 feet.

4. Project area topographic maps. These are composites of regular topographic quadrangle maps reduced to cover the project area. They show the proposed pool outline superimposed over existing features with 20-foot contour intervals. Maps are available for the following projects:

  • Tims Ford. Lithoprinted in color.
    Size: 22" by 34"
    Scale: 1" = 1/2 mile
  • Tellico. Lithoprinted in color.
    Size: 22" by 34"
    Scale: 1" = 1 mile
  • Nickajack. Covers only the newly formed portion of the reservoir from the old Hales Bar Dam to Nickajack Dam. Blackline prints.
    Size: 12" by 24"
    Scale: 1" = 1/4 mile.

5. Navigation-recreation maps. Navigation-recreation maps. Maps of tributary reservoirs showing underwater contour information, navigation markers, recreation information, and other data. Lithoprinted in color, available for the following reservoirs:

  • Douglas
    Scale: 1" = 1/2 mile
  • Cherokee
    Scale: 1" = 1/2 mile
  • Normandy
    Scale: 1" = 1000'

We have no underwater contour maps for Pickwick, Wilson, or Wheeler reservoirs.
