Gallatin Flue Gas Desulfurization & Selective Catalytic Reduction Projects

December 1, 2011

On August 18, 2011, as part of TVA’s commitment to cleaner energy, the board of directors approved the addition of new emission control systems at Gallatin Fossil Plant.  Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and flue gas desulfurization (FGD), or scrubber, systems will be installed at the plant which began operation in 1959.  More than 90 percent of nitrogen oxide and 95 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions will be removed by the SCR and scrubber, respectively.

TVA is currently in the conceptual design phase for both projects. The target date for the scrubber system to be operational is January 1, 2016, followed by the SCR system coming online a year later, January 1, 2017.
