Allen Flue Gas Desulfurization Project
December 1, 2011
On August 18, 2011, as part of TVA’s commitment to cleaner energy, the board of directors approved construction of a flue gas desulfurization (FGD), or scrubber, system at Allen Fossil Plant. This system will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions up to 95 percent at the plant which began operation in 1959.
In 2003, TVA installed a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system at Allen to reduce nitrogen oxide more than 90 percent by transforming emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
TVA is currently in the conceptual design phase, with a target date of January 1, 2016, for the scrubber system to be operational and in service.
