Muscle Shoals Reservation Redevelopment Effort Continues

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. — The Tennessee Valley Authority will hold two public meetings on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 14 and 15, to encourage discussion and comments on the redevelopment of about 1,400 acres of TVA’s Muscle Shoals Reservation.
Community members can help shape the project’s Comprehensive Master Plan, which will guide sustainable land use, resource enhancement and protection, and economic development of the property. Results from these meetings will be presented at another public session in December 2011.
A final Environmental Impact Statement, which assesses the impact to the environment if the property is developed, will be available on TVA’s web site at www.tva.com/environment/reports on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The final EIS will also be available at the public meetings.
TVA’s preferred option is Alternative F, which calls for unrestricted use of the property. This would provide the greatest opportunity for economic benefits to the area and region, reduce TVA’s operating and maintenance costs and environmental footprint, encourage reuse of some historic buildings and structures, and leave future land use decisions to the local community. Under this alternative, the Comprehensive Master Plan will allow a well-designed development strategy that would provide increased income and job opportunities.
The first meeting on Monday, Nov. 14, will be held in Lauderdale County at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center in the Banquet Hall, 10 Hightower Place, Florence. The second meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15, will be held in Colbert County at the Northwest-Shoals Community College in the Patriot Center gym, 800 George Wallace Blvd., Muscle Shoals.
Meetings begin at 5 p.m. CST with a presentation about the Muscle Shoals Reservation property, followed by breakout sessions for people to give their opinions on property development. Sessions will be staggered during the two-hour meeting so those who cannot attend at 5 p.m. will still be able to participate. The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development.
