TVA Donates to Boys and Girls Club of Benton

October 4, 2011

BENTON, Tenn. – The Tennessee Valley Authority is donating $5,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Benton to purchase supplies and to support the staff and general operations of the agency.

"TVA continues to fulfill its basic mission which is to help improve the quality of life of the people of the Tennessee Valley," said John McCormick, senior vice president of River Operations at TVA. "It's an honor to help programs that enrich children's lives."

TVA presented the check to Cindy Hooker, unit director of the club which serves more than 125 youth in Polk County.

The club provides after-school and summer programs that provide fun and teach skills needed to make good decisions.

"We are so grateful for TVA's donation to help expand our youth services," Hooker said. "Our programs are improving, and donations like this are so important."

The club began in December 2007 at a local church with a $57,000 grant from the U.S. Office of Justice and recently received a grant to construct its own building.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for distribution utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to about 34,000 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA's service territory are below the national average.
