TVA Realigns Senior Management Structure

Dec. 4, 2009

TVA will realign its senior management structure in January to increase organizational efficiency and accountability, streamline business processes and improve customer service, President and CEO Tom Kilgore announced this week.

The new structure is led by an executive council and is organized around five critical tasks – serving customers; maintaining and improving assets and facilities; setting and communicating corporate strategy; building talent and driving accountability; and providing robust financial stewardship.

The executive council includes Kilgore; Chief Operating Officer Bill McCollum; current Chief Financial Officer Kim Greene, who was appointed to a new position of group president over all activities involving external stakeholders; John Thomas, appointed to the new position of chief people and performance officer; John Hoskins, as interim chief financial officer; and General Counsel Maureen Dunn. Thomas is currently senior vice president of Corporate Governance & Compliance, and Hoskins is senior vice president and treasurer.

The chief information officer, responsible for leveraging technology and setting strategies for TVA’s information resources, will be part of the new management structure and will report to the CEO but not be a member of the executive council.  TVA plans to hire a chief information officer and new chief financial officer.

“This new organizational structure will help us become stronger, more efficient and more accountable as we work to fulfill our missions of affordable energy production, economic development and environmental stewardship,” Kilgore said. “The aftermath of the ash spill at Kingston and other recent events have shown that organizational changes are needed to help us improve accountability for recognizing and addressing problems more quickly.”

As chief operating officer, McCollum will be responsible for running, maintaining and improving the performance of all TVA generation assets and operations as well as transmission, fuels and facilities.

In the new group president position, Greene will be responsible for strategy, planning, customer service, government relations, communications, environmental operations, commercial activities and renewable energy. Kilgore said Greene “is uniquely qualified for this important new position that will focus on setting TVA’s corporate strategy and serving our customers and other external stakeholders.”

Thomas, who has the lead role in TVA’s organizational transformation, will be responsible for human resources, organizational effectiveness, diversity, performance evaluation, compliance and security operations. “The new position of chief people and performance officer will be responsible for building talent and driving a culture of ownership and accountability across TVA,” Kilgore said.

The chief financial officer will be responsible for TVA’s financial integrity, treasury and risk functions, supply chain and the TVA Retirement System. As general counsel, Dunn will be responsible for legal services and strategies.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing.  TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also creates economic development opportunities and manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
