TVA Asks for Comments on Proposed Transmission Project

Sept. 14, 2011

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Tennessee Valley Authority is seeking public comments on a transmission line project that will provide reliable power to the growing area.

TVA is proposing to build 12 to 18 miles of 161-kilovolt transmission line to power Huntsville Utilities’ planned Charity Lane Substation upgrade from 46 kilovolts to 161 kilovolts. The line would extend northwest from TVA’s existing Madison 500-kV Substation towards the Charity Lane Substation, located southeast of the intersection of Charity Lane and Highway 231.

TVA is considering several alternate routes from a network of 50 possible line segments. About two miles of the line could use the vacant side of existing double-circuit towers. The rest of the line would be built on steel pole structures centered on a 100-foot right-of-way.

Public input is encouraged, beginning with an open house on Sept. 22, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. CDT, at the Flint River Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 12945 Highway 231/431 North, Hazel Green, Ala.

Detailed maps showing the different routes for the proposed power line will be available. TVA staff will be on hand to answer questions, discuss concerns and receive comments. More information is available at www.tva.com/power/projects.

To submit comments, contact TVA’s Kelly Evans toll free at (800) 362-4355, by e-mail at newtransline@tva.com or by mail to: Kelly Evans, Tennessee Valley Authority, 1101 Market St., MR 4G, Chattanooga, Tenn., 37402-2801. The deadline is Oct. 24.
