Cumberland Fossil Plant to Test Sirens on Sept. 27

CUMBERLAND CITY, Tenn. Tennessee Valley Authority’s Cumberland Fossil Plant, with assistance from state and local emergency response agencies, will conduct a test of onsite chemical sirens on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at noon CDT. The sirens will sound for approximately one minute and may be audible offsite. This is only a test.
In an actual emergency, the sirens would be activated in the event of an ammonia release. Ammonia is used in the clean-air process of removing nitrogen oxide from the plant’s emissions. TVA routinely conducts training and drills at the plant to ensure the proper storage and handling of ammonia.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development.
