Browns Ferry Raises $100,000 for Partners in Education Schools

ATHENS, Ala. – The Tennessee Valley Authority’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant raised more than $100,000 in employee, contractor and vendor donations for its Partners in Education schools this month with its annual charity golf tournament.

Held at the Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala., proceeds from the tournament went to Athens High School, Clements School, G.W. Trenholm Primary School, Wilson School and Colbert Heights School.

“The tournament’s growing success rests in the result of charitable TVA vendors, contractors and tournament players,” said Scott Martin, a Browns Ferry employee and volunteer tournament chairman.

This was the tournament’s 10th year.

“You can track the success of our students because of our relationship with Browns Ferry throughout the years of this fundraising event for schools in the area,” Athens High School Principal Chris Bolen said. “Our students are getting a much better education through TVA’s Partners in Education program.”

“The tournament keeps growing every year,” Martin said. “TVA raised nearly $17,000 the first year, and 2010 marks the third year in a row that $100,000 was raised. It is an honor to give to the area schools. Most of us live in north Alabama and our children go to the schools represented. This is one way we give back to the community and serve the Tennessee Valley.”

TVA Chief Operating Officer Bill McCollum attended a recognition dinner prior to the event and congratulated both TVA’s business partners and the schools.

“This event would not be possible without TVA’s vendors and business partners we have in the local community,” McCollum said. “To the schools, thank you for what you are doing to develop the future leaders of north Alabama, and to our partners and vendors, we appreciate all your support.”

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million.
