Smoky Mountain Region Combined Federal Campaign Announces Chairpersons for 2010

Sept. 13, 2010

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The co-chairs for the 2010 Smoky Mountain Combined Federal Campaign are the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations and Pricing John Trawick and Johnathan Sitzlar, supervisory building manager for the U.S. General Services Administration.

The annual campaign gives federal employees an opportunity to make financial contributions to local, regional, national or international charitable health and human-service organizations.

This year’s campaign kicks off Thursday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m. EDT at TVA headquarters in downtown Knoxville. Participating federal agencies in the Smoky Mountain Region will complete their campaigns in early December with a goal of raising $750,000; TVA’s portion of that goal is $525,000.

Established in 1961 as a result of President Kennedy’s efforts, the Combined Federal Campaign has become the nation’s leading workplace giving program, raising more money for charity than any other annual employee-giving program.

As co-chairs, Trawick and Sitzlar will oversee the Smoky Mountain Region CFC in 26 counties in East Tennessee, two in North Carolina and one each in Kentucky and Virginia. In addition to TVA and the U.S. General Services Administration, other participating area federal agencies include the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Energy and the Office of Surface Mining. All federal government offices in the 26-county region will participate in the campaign.

“Every year, CFC contributions make a positive difference in the lives of others,” Trawick said. “TVA and other federal employees have traditionally given generously of both their time and money to help the communities where they live and work. Their resolve and commitment are why we chose ‘LEAD -- Learn, Engage, Act, Donate’ asour campaign theme.”

Federal employees working with Trawick on the campaign include TVA Communications Senior Vice President David Mould, who is campaign executive for TVA; Carolyn Minter and Libby Nickle, TVA campaign co-chairs who will support Mould; Postmaster Sam Jaudon, who is campaign chairman for the U.S. Postal Service in Knoxville; Lt. Cmdr. Darrell L. Neeley, campaign chairman for Knoxville Military Entrance and Processing; and Department of Energy-Oak Ridge Manager Gerald Boyd, who is campaign chairman for the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office.

Serving as loaned executives for the Smoky Mountain Region Combined Federal Campaign are Emily Guffey, a Department of Energy employee in Oak Ridge; Laurie Folden, a National Nuclear Security Administration employee at Y-12 in Oak Ridge; Shirley Goolsby, a postal service employee in Knoxville, and Cynthia Ghosten, a Knoxville TVA employee.

The Smoky Mountain Region Combined Federal Campaign last year raised more than $716,000 for local and national charitable agencies.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to 33,700 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA’s service territory are below the national average.
