Sept. 17, 2009

BRYSON CITY, N.C. - North Carolina Route 1245 across Fontana Dam will be closed to traffic Oct. 1 through early February 2010, to allow work to refurbish three of the water intake gates at the TVA dam.

Sandblasting equipment and a mobile crane will be placed on top of the dam during the project. Foot traffic will be allowed across the dam, enabling continued access to the Appalachian Trail. The parking area at the dam will remain open throughout the work.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also creates economic development opportunities and manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
