Camp-on-the-Lake Campground Closed for Remainder of the Season
September 3, 2009
To help ensure the safety of the public, TVA has closed the Camp-On-The-Lake Campground on Nickajack Reservoir for the remainder of the 2009 camping season.
The campground operator chose not to renew the lease at the campground, and operations under the lease ended on June 25. Because the restrooms are closed and the camping area is not being maintained, TVA considers informal camping unsafe.
TVA will gate the property, place signs alerting the public that the camping area is closed, and review options for the property for the 2010 camping season. Options include reopening the area as a campground, opening it as a day-use area or keeping it closed. Decisions on the campground’s future use will be made available to the public.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also creates economic development opportunities and manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
