Browns Ferry Golf Tournament Raises More Than $90,000 For Area Schools

Aug. 28, 2009

ATHENS, Ala. – The annual Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Partners in Education Golf Tournament raised more than $90,000 this week to benefit five area schools.

The tournament on Tuesday, Aug. 25, marks the ninth year the TVA plant has partnered with area schools to fund education programs. The tournament was held at Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club in Muscle Shoals.

Proceeds from the tournament were distributed to Athens High School, Clements School (K-12), G.W. Trenholm Primary, Wilson School (K-12) and Colbert Heights School (K-12) during a ceremony at Cypress Lakes.

“This money could not have come at a better time,” said Athens High Principal Don Bowling. “TVA and Browns Ferry are welcome at Athens High anytime. We can show you exactly where your dollars are going.”

Organizers raised donations through sponsorships with many of Browns Ferry’s contract partners. The foursome of John Blenkinsopp, Billy Pierce, Mike Lovell and John-Michael Vacca – all Browns Ferry employees – won the tournament.

“This is one of the many ways TVA gives back to the local community,” said Browns Ferry Site Vice President Rusty West. “Browns Ferry and TVA’s community service to North Alabama reflects our longstanding commitment to the region’s future.”

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million people in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
