Chattanooga Area Combined Federal Campaign Announces 2010 Chairman

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Ashok Bhatnagar, TVA’s senior vice president of nuclear generation development and construction, will serve as chairman of the 2010 Greater Chattanooga Area Combined Federal Campaign.
The campaign, held annually to give federal employees an opportunity to contribute to charitable health and human service organizations, will kick off in September and end in November.
As chairman, Bhatnagar will oversee the 21-county Greater Chattanooga CFC that includes counties in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. For the past two years, the campaign has raised more than $1.4 million annually for local and national charitable agencies.
“TVA and other federal employees know they are fortunate to have good jobs. They give generously of both their time and money to help the communities where they live and work,” said Bhatnagar. “Every year, CFC contributions make a positive difference in the lives of others and during this economic downturn the impact of such gifts is tremendous for people less fortunate.”
Prior to the kickoff, federal employees will participate in the 18th annual Day of Caring. More than 400 volunteers will help local agencies receiving CFC contributions by spending the day painting, building, landscaping, cleaning and cooking.
Federal employees in the Chattanooga area who will work with Bhatnagar in the campaign include John Fornicola, TVA, campaign manager; Mitchell Standifer, TVA, campaign materials coordinator; Paul Adams, U.S. Postal Service; Thomas Harriman and Janice Griffin, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Angie Stock, Social Security Administration, Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, and Steve Saunders, TVA, Local Federal Coordinating Committee chairman.
Federal employees in the Chattanooga area have raised more than $32 million for local and national charitable agencies since 1987, and have been recognized for the highest average gift per person in campaigns raising $1 million to $2 million worldwide. The Chattanooga Area Combined Federal Campaign includes more than 9,300 federal employees.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to 36,000 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA’s service territory are below the national average.
