TVA To Hold Public Briefing on Integrated Resource Plan

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Valley Authority will hold a public briefing session at 6 p.m. EDT, Thursday, May 13, on the status of its Integrated Resource Plan, known as “TVA’s Environmental and Energy Future,” which will outline TVA’s electricity needs over the next 20 years.
TVA representatives will answer questions, take comments from the public and discuss what the agency has learned so far about how TVA will meet the future requirements for electricity and resource stewardship for its seven-state territory.
The meeting will be in the West Tower Auditorium of TVA’s Knoxville offices at 400 West Summit Hill Drive.
To increase public participation, the meeting also will be accessible on the Internet. Participants will be able to listen to the presentations and send in questions from their home computers through a webinar conference option. TVA staff will respond during the webinar so all online participants can hear the answers.

In addition to quarterly public meetings, TVA regularly posts information on the Integrated Resource Plan on the TVA website. TVA expects to release a draft plan for public comment this fall and present a completed plan to the TVA Board of Directors for approval in spring 2011.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to 36,000 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA’s service territory are below the national average.
