Family Christian Academy Graduate John Till Awarded TVA Scholarship

May 26, 2010

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – John Till, a 2010 graduate of Family Christian Academy, has won a college scholarship of up to $25,000 from the Tennessee Valley Authority. He is among 12 Employee Dependent Scholarship winners chosen this year.

John is the son of Lynn and B. David Till III. David is employed by TVA in Chattanooga. John plans to attend Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, where he will study mechanical engineering.

Scholarship selection is made independently of TVA and administered by Scholarship America, a national nonprofit and student-aid services organization.

This year, 102 high school seniors applied for the scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on the student’s high school GPA, ACT/SAT test scores, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience and statement of goals.

At Family Christian Academy, John was a National Merit Commended Scholar, a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, a participant in cross country track and mock trial. He also won the Chattanooga State 2009 Chemistry Award.

The TVA Employee Dependent Scholarship Program was created in 1994 to reward excellence in academics by providing financial assistance to college-bound children of TVA employees. Two categories of scholarship awards are available ― four-year bachelor’s degree scholarships worth up to $5,000 the first school year and renewable for up to four additional years, and two-year associate degree scholarships worth up to $2,500 the first school year and renewable for one year.  Children of TVA retirees and employees who are vice presidents or above are not eligible to participate in the scholarship program.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to 36,000 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA’s service territory are below the national average.
