May 26, 2010
McEWEN, Tenn. – Elizabeth Campbell, a 2010 graduate of Waverly Central High School, has won a college scholarship of up to $25,000 from the Tennessee Valley Authority. She is among 12 Employee Dependent Scholarship winners chosen this year.
Elizabeth is the daughter of June and Harley Campbell. Harley is employed by TVA’s Johnsonville Fossil Plant in New Johnsonville. Elizabeth plans to attend the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va., where she will study chemistry.
Scholarship selection is made independently of TVA and administered by Scholarship America, a national nonprofit and student-aid services organization.
This year, 102 high school seniors applied for the scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on the student’s high school GPA, ACT/SAT test scores, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience and statement of goals.
At Waverly Central High, Elizabeth was valedictorian, a Tennessee Scholar and an Exchange Club student of the month. She also was named an honors student by Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City.
The TVA Employee Dependent Scholarship Program was created in 1994 to reward excellence in academics by providing financial assistance to college-bound children of TVA employees. Two categories of scholarship awards are available ― four-year bachelor’s degree scholarships worth up to $5,000 the first school year and renewable for up to four additional years, and two-year associate degree scholarships worth up to $2,500 the first school year and renewable for one year. Children of TVA retirees and employees who are vice presidents or above are not eligible to participate in the scholarship program.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia – an area of 80,000 square miles with a population of 9 million. TVA operates 29 hydroelectric dams, 11 coal-fired power plants, three nuclear plants and 11 natural gas-fired power facilities and supplies up to 36,000 megawatts of electricity, delivered over 16,000 miles of high-voltage power lines. TVA also provides flood control, navigation, land management and recreation for the Tennessee River system and works with local utilities and state and local governments to promote economic development across the region. TVA, which makes no profits and receives no taxpayer money, is funded by sales of electricity to its customers. Electricity prices in TVA’s service territory are below the national average.
