Watts Bar Golf Tournament Raises More than $50,000 for Area Schools

SPRING CITY, Tenn. — For the second consecutive year, TVA Watts Bar Nuclear Plant employees raised more than $50,000 for Partners in Education schools at the seventh annual benefit golf tournament earlier this year.

Funds raised at the tournament will be used for equipment and supplies at Watts Bar’s five Partners in Education schools − Meigs North Elementary, Niota Elementary, Spring City Elementary, Walnut Hill Elementary and Madisonville Middle School.

“Over the past seven years, the Watts Bar Partners in Education Committee has raised more than $215,000 to benefit the children in our partner schools,” said Watts Bar employee Bob Baldwin, one of the PIE coordinators for the plant. “Our employees volunteer a tremendous amount of their time and energy every year to make the tournament successful. We thank them and our generous sponsors and participants.”

This year’s tournament was held at Springbrook Golf and Country Club in Niota, Tenn. More than 150 golfers participated in the event.

“It’s amazing how important the funds raised during the tournaments are to our neighboring schools,” Baldwin said. “The funding permits educators to make improvements for students with needed equipment and supplies.”

In addition to the golf tournament, Watts Bar provides other support to the schools during the year with donations of surplus equipment and fulfilling general requests for maintenance and supplies.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
