South Knoxville Waterfront Environmental Review Available for Comment

TVA and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers have completed a draft environmental assessment of the city of Knoxville’s proposed waterfront development in South Knoxville and are encouraging public comments on it.

Proposed public improvements include river walks and other walkways, floating docks and a fishing pier. Stabilization of the shoreline and adding fill also are proposed.

Improvements would be made in three separate areas along the south side of the riverfront in downtown Knoxville — from the Gay Street Bridge to just east of the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge; from Lincoln Street to Barber Street; and from Baker Creek to about one-tenth of a mile west of Baker Creek along Island Home Avenue.

TVA and the USACE are asking for comments on the potential of the proposed improvements to impact the environment and on any other issues associated with the proposal. Any comments received, including names and addresses, will become part of the record and be available for public inspection.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
