TVA, Employees Give to Local Communities

April 19, 2007

TVA and its 12,500 employees donated more than 26,000 volunteer hours -- a 30-percent increase from 2005 – as well as equipment, supplies and in-kind services to local communities across the Tennessee Valley during 2006.

TVA retirees continued their spirit of volunteerism by contributing an additional 23,000 volunteer hours of community work.

Significant contributions were made in the areas of economic and community partnerships, education, human services and the environment, according to TVA’s 2006 Report to Communities. Projects included building Habitat for Humanity homes, working with 68 Partners in Education schools to provide assistance, and donations of time and money to the Combined Federal Campaign. The report is available.

“We are proud of the role that TVA, our employees and our retirees play in making the Tennessee Valley a better place to live, work and raise a family,” said TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore. “Our employees and retirees make a difference in our communities by volunteering their personal time and through personal donations.”

TVA employees donated more than $2.5 million to the Combined Federal Campaign, an annual fund raising program similar to United Way, and are among the federal government’s most generous contributors.

TVA employees and retirees taught water safety, boating safety, and bicycle safety to school children across the Valley. Employees also supported communities through public awareness activities that included helping more than 3,500 volunteers remove more than 123 tons of trash from parks, roads and waterways, and through the Kids in the Creek program and the Clean Marina Initiative, where children and boaters have an opportunity to learn the importance of keeping the water clean.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.7 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
