A ‘smart’ way to promote Green Power Switch

Tisdal Place in Jackson, Tennessee, will be a showcase for energy efficiency in older homes.

Tisdal Place, as the home is called, was the first in Jackson to sign up for Green Power Switch after JEA joined the program in June. The project will allow JEA to showcase residential energy efficiency and modern technology.

JEA plans to completely renovate the home and upgrade the interior so that it becomes a highly energy-efficient, high-tech residence. The project should be finished by late October, in time to be part of Jackson’s fall HomeFest 2002.

The “smart house” will have such conveniences as computer-controlled lighting and appliances. That will allow the homeowner, for example, to change the thermostat and possibly operate other appliances from a computer at work. “Our goal was to renovate an older home so that people could see what they can do to improve efficiency in their own homes,” says Bruce Dorris, JEA Technical Services Coordinator. “We also hope the project will promote Green Power Switch and persuade others in the community to sign up for the environmentally beneficial program.”

Tisdal Place will be open for tours during HomeFest and probably for another six months after that before it is sold as a residence. “It’s a perfect project for the Energy Authority,” Dorris says. “We’re excited about showing the community what a smart house can offer.” For more information, contact Dorris at 731-422-7294, or visit the Jackson Energy Authority Web site.

Hungry for Green Power Switch
Testing the old saying that the way to someone’s heart is through his (or her) stomach, the Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation presented Green Power Switch information sessions at breakfast, lunch, and dinner meetings throughout its five-county service area.

“Thanks to the outstanding presentations by Gary Harris, GPS Program Manager, we were able to sign up a surprising number of customers at these meetings,” says Virginia Lowe, CEMC consumer services manager. CEMC followed up the meetings with a six-week advertising campaign, supplemented by bill inserts to all 76,000 members. Now the co-op is taking the message of renewable energy to area civic clubs.
