BENEFITS - PRACTICE 11

Work-Related Death Benefits and Insurance Expenses

WHAT

TVA will pay for funeral and related expenses for eligible active employees and eligible contractors who die as the result of an injury suffered in a work-related accident within 12 months of the accident. In addition, TVA will provide medical insurance coverage in the TVA retirees medical plan to eligible dependent survivors who die as the result of an injury suffered in a work-related accident.

WHO

Eligibility for these benefits are limited to employees and contractors under the following circumstances. Active TVA employees are eligible for funeral and related expenses and medical insurance benefits if they die as a result of injuries suffered in a work-related accident within 12 months of the date of the accident. Also, contractors are eligible for funeral and related expenses if:

  • they die as a result of injuries suffered in a work-related accident 12 months after the date of the accident, and
  • they were working under a contract directly between the individual and TVA when the accident occurred.

WHY

TVA wants to help employees’ and contractors’ families with funeral and other related expenses when their deaths result from their work for TVA.

HOW

Funeral and Related Expenses

The employee’s or contractor’s organization will pay up to $10,000 for funeral and related expenses for an eligible employee or an eligible contractor, beginning March 6, 1998, under Public Law No. 104-208. The chief officer of the organization for which the employee or contractor was working at the time of the accident is authorized to approve payments of the expenses.

Dependent’s Medical Insurance Coverage

In addition, TVA will provide medical insurance coverage in the TVA retiree medical plan to eligible dependent survivors of an employee who dies as the result of an injury in a work-related accident within 12 months after the date of the injury. Eligible dependents will continue to receive the existing medical insurance coverage at no charge for the month in which the death occurs, and for two additional months. After this period, the eligible dependents may be covered in the TVA retiree medical plan under the same cost-sharing proportion arrangement as an active TVA employee for as long as they are eligible under the retiree medical plan.
