Wilson Hydro Plant Modernization of Turbines

On January 28, 2005, TVA issued a final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the proposed rehabilitation and modernization of 11 generating units at Wilson Hydro Plant in Lauderdale and Colbert counties, Alabama. Generating units 9-18 were rehabilitated and modernized between 1994 and 2000, and this project would rehabilitate and modernize the remaining units, 1-8 and 19-21.

Because of their age and condition, TVA must soon rehabilitate the 11 generating units. The proposed modernization would allow TVA to continue to maintain safe and reliable peak power generation at Wilson, while improving operational efficiency, increasing generating capacity, and increasing net income from the power system. The work is currently scheduled to begin in 2008 and proceed at the rate of two units per year through 2013 or 2014. As part of the proposed action, TVA would also stabilize eroding shoreline in the Wilson Dam tailwater area to protect important archaeological sites.
