Watts Bar Fossil Plant Deconstruction
Rhea County, Tennessee
On June 22, 2011, TVA issued an environmental assessment (EA) and a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the Watts Bar Fossil Plant (WBF) Deconstruction Project to alleviate hazardous conditions. The plant, which was shut down in 1983, and some associated structures are deteriorating, and their long-term structural integrity is in jeopardy.
The EA evaluates the environmental impacts of taking no action and of deconstructing WBF. Under the Preferred Alternative of deconstructing WBF, TVA proposes to properly remove and dispose of asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, and hazardous materials and to deconstruct the WBF Powerhouse and adjacent structures to eliminate safety hazards and environmental risks.
The EA and FONSI are presented below.
