Nickajack Hydro Plant Modernization of Turbines
Marion County, Tennessee
On January 31, 2008, TVA issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact for its proposal to rehabilitate and modernize the 4 generating units at Nickajack Hydro Plant, located in Marion County, Tennessee. TVA’s preferred alternative is to proceed with hydromodernization to ensure safe and reliable peak power generation and increase the plant generating capacity.
Nickajack Dam and Hydro Plant were completed in 1967. The 4 generating units or turbines can produce 100 megawatts of electricity. The proposed modernization would increase the plant generating capacity by 14 megawatts and more efficiently utilize available renewable water resources to the benefit of TVA’s ratepayers. Although the modernization would increase the maximum amount of water that can pass through the turbines from 46 to 51 thousand cubic feet per second, the total flows past Nickajack Dam would not change and more of the water that is otherwise lost to spilling would be utilized for hydrogeneration.
A draft of the environmental assessment was available for public comment in December 2007. Comments received on the draft are addressed in the final environmental assessment.
