Piney Creek, Limestone County, Alabama
On December 7, 2007, TVA issued a finding of no significant impact for culverts, pedestrian bridges and wetland fills requested by the Canebrake Club along Piney Creek, a tributary to Wheeler Reservoir near Athens, Alabama.
The structures require approval by TVA under Section 26a of the TVA Act and approval by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. TVA adopted an environmental assessment of the proposed facilities issued by the Corps on October 24, 2007.
The proposal involves filling 8.7 acres of wetlands and 1,300 feet of streams, installation of culverts and after-the-fact approval for pedestrian bridges. Canebrake will implement a mitigation plan which includes wetland creation and preservation, habitat enhancement on existing and relocated streams, and a permanent conservation easement along 9,200 feet of stream.
