Final Environmental
Assessment
Browns Ferry Nuclear PlantUnits 2 and 3 Extended Power Uprate This final environmental assessment evaluates a proposal to increase reactor thermal power above the originally licensed level by 20 percent each for Browns Ferry Unit 2 and Browns Ferry Unit 3. The units’ original licenses were for 3,293 megawatts thermal power per reactor. The proposed project involves using existing industry methods, processes, and experience to make modifications to some plant equipment and miscellaneous system set point changes. Increasing power for Browns Ferry units 2 and 3 will add about 250 megawatts of additional electric power to the TVA system through the use of an existing plant and without a significant environmental impact. Technical and economic analyses indicate that the thermal effects of the proposed uprate on the adjacent Wheeler Reservoir can be mitigated by the use of existing cooling towers and by decreasing power production as necessary to maintain compliance with the plant’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit.
