TVA's Clean Air Program
TVA has one of the most aggressive emission control programs in the country. Since regulation began, TVA has reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by 91 percent and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 87 percent.
TVA is continuing to add emissions control equipment to help improve regional air quality. Two new scrubbers are now operational at the Kingston Fossil Plant, reducing all emissions from the plant's 10 units, and new scrubbers were approved by the TVA Board for installation at the Allen and Gallatin Fossil Plants by 2016. New SCRs for NOx control were also approved by the TVA Board for installation at the Gallatin Fossil plant by 2017.
This video gives an overview of the clean-air equipment TVA has installed at its coal-burning plants. It illustrates how scrubbers help control SO2 and SCRs (selective catalytic reduction systems) help reduce NOx to improve regional air quality.
