Shawnee Fossil Plant

What TVA is doing about emissions at Shawnee

TVA has taken a number of steps to make the efficient generation of power at Shawnee as clean as possible:

  • The fluidized-bed combustion boiler at Shawnee Unit 10 removes the sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the furnace itself, rather than through a separate flue-gas pollution-control device. The boiler also greatly reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to the formation of ozone and acid rain.
  • The plant’s nine other units burn a blend of low-sulfur coal to limit SO2 emissions.
  • Low-NOx burners at Units 1 through 9 reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.
