Kingston Fossil Plant

What TVA is doing about emissions at Kingston

TVA has taken a number of steps to make the efficient generation of power at Kingston as clean as possible:

  • The plant burns a low-sulfur blend of coal in all nine units to limit emissions of sulfur dioxide.
  • Two scrubbers were completed in 2010 at a cost of $475 million, further reducing SO2 emissions by up to 95 percent.
  • Four units use low-NOx burners to reduce the production of nitrogen oxides that contribute to ozone and acid rain. Boiler optimization and combustion controls, which allow coal to be burned more thoroughly and efficiently, limit the production of NOx at the plant’s five other units.
  • Nine units operate selective catalytic reduction systems during the May to September ozone season, reducing NOx by more than 90 percent.
