TVA: The Company

TVA is more than an electric utility. As a regional development corporation, TVA is helping balance economic growth and environmental health on behalf of generations to come. Here are some fast facts about the company:

• TVA is the nation’s largest public power corporation, having produced more than 155 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2004.

• Working in partnership with 158 locally owned power distributors, TVA provides electricity to 8.5 million people. TVA also serves 62 large industries and federal facilities directly.

• TVA is a $7 billion corporation, and its programs are almost entirely supported by power revenues. No tax dollars fund its power-system or river-management functions.

• TVA operates three nuclear plants, 11 fossil plants, 29 hydroelectric plants, six combustion-turbine plants, and a pumped-storage plant. It has recently added three renewable sources to its energy mix: solar, wind, and methane gas. TVA power travels across 17,000 miles of transmission lines.

• TVA manages the Tennessee River for flood control, navigation, power supply, recreation, and water quality and quantity. The company’s water quality experts monitor the health of the Tennessee River and work with businesses, agencies, and landowners to help make the river safe for future generations.

• TVA and the distributors of TVA power offer a renewable energy option called Green Power Switch, which allows households and businesses to buy blocks of power generated by solar systems, wind turbines, and methane gas.

• TVA publishes periodic environmental reports that outlines the company’s environmental initiatives, including the reduction of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and the improvement of aquatic habitat.

• In fiscal year 2004, TVA worked in partnership with various economic development organizations and partners to help attract or retain 50,388 jobs and leverage $2.1 billion in capital investment.  TVA also provided more than $13.5 million in economic development loans.

TVA is an equal opportunity and affirmative-action employer. TVA ensures that the benefits of programs receiving TVA financial assistance are available to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, or age.
