TVA is more than an electric utility. As a regional development corporation, TVA is helping balance economic growth and environmental health on behalf of generations to come. Here are some fast facts about the company:
TVA is the nations largest public power corporation, producing more than 150 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.
Working in partnership with {local} locally owned power distributors, TVA provides electricity to nine million people. TVA also serves 56 large industries and federal facilities directly.
TVA is a $10 billion corporation, and its programs are almost entirely supported by power revenues. No tax dollars fund its power-system or river-management functions.
TVA power is generated at three nuclear plants, 11 coal-burning fossil plants, 29 hydroelectric dams, a pumped-storage plant, and renewable solar, wind, and methane gas projects. Combustion turbines that burn natural gas or fuel oil provide power at four fossil sites and seven freestanding sites. Eight Army Corps of Engineers dams and four Alcoa dams also contribute power to the TVA system. All of this power travels across 15,900 miles of transmission line.
TVA manages the Tennessee River for flood damage reduction, navigation, power supply, recreation, and water quality and quantity. The companys water quality experts monitor the health of the Tennessee River and work with businesses, agencies, and landowners to help make the river safe for future generations.
TVA and the distributors of TVA power offer a renewable energy option called Green Power Switch that allows households and businesses to buy blocks of power generated by renewable resources.
TVA publishes periodic environmental reports that outline the companys environmental initiatives, including the reduction of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and the improvement of aquatic habitat.
In fiscal year 2009, TVA worked in partnership with various economic development organizations and partners to help attract or retain more than 25,000 jobs and leverage $4.2 billion in capital investment in the Tennessee Valley region.
